By Lyndon Leggate, Team Member

Over the weekend of the 6th, 7th and 8th of January 2001, winning

ThinkQuest team, "An End to World Hunger: Hope for the Future,"

traveled to Washington, D.C. to accept the Digital Diplomacy

award given by the US State department. The site also earned an

Honorable Mention in this year's Internet Challenge.

Being that this was the first time the entire team had met

face-to-face, the weekend was an incredible experience that will

never be forgotten. It began with a private night tour visiting many

of the monuments and attractions that Washington D.C. has to

offer. This was followed by visits to the Smithsonian and other

museums in Washington D.C. and to the fantastic show "Blast" at

the Kennedy Center. Several members of the group even toured the

Oval Office in the White house Monday night before returning

home. During the morning of Monday, January 8th, an award ceremony

was held in the Treaty Room of the State Department building,

where certificates and awards of $2,000 were given out to the

three winning student team members; Mike Robbins (Philadelphia,

USA), Nicki Mahncke (Hong Kong) and Lyndon Leggate

(London, England). Coaches Cathy Bronsdon (USA), Doug Ross

(USA) and Hans Mahncke (Netherlands) also received $500.

Since the topic of the winning site was about solving the problem

of World Hunger, Monday also provided the opportunity to meet

with distinguished leaders who have committed themselves to the

cause of ending world hunger in our lifetimes. These people

included U.S. Congressman Tony Hall, a long time proponent of ending

world hunger and Robert Egger from the DC Central Kitchen.

Both men took time to meet with us and allowed us to learn more

about the problem - the current situation and ways that it can, and

is, being solved. Being able to get some hands-on experience at the

DC Central Kitchen gave us an insight into the enormous amount of

good work that is undertaken there. This program has become a

model for around 40 other similar kitchens in the States.

All in all, a wonderful time was had by both team members and the

family members who accompanied them to Washington D. C.

When you get people from England, the US, Hong Kong, Germany

and Holland together at the same time, the dinner conversation

never gets boring!
